About Spectacles for Students

Spectacles for Students is now a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to providing free glasses and eye exams to school aged children who cannot afford them. Clear vision is vital to a child’s development in school- without being able to see, they can become fatigued easily and have trouble with paying attention and comprehending the material. Untreated vision problems can be falsely diagnosed as a learning disability or ADHD. Uninsured children are three times as likely to go without eyeglasses when needed and 24% of children who need follow up care were unable to obtain it because of limited financial ability. A study conducted by the National Commission on Vision and Health found that children who are treated for eye problems perform better academically by as much as an entire extra year of school. The use of eyeglasses is specifically correlated with improving grades and higher scores on standardized tests.
